If you could hear what spirits around you had to say – would you listen?

Ghost hunting and making contact with spirits is growing in popularity. People are breaking through the perception that this is in some way taboo, and they are taking it upon themselves to make contact with those existing outside our realm.

Some dive into the unknown to concrete their feelings that someone is trying to reach out, and others want to expand their knowledge of worlds that exist outside of our own.

They are seeking knowledge of beings that most people cannot comprehend, and look for answers that aren’t available freely.

Whatever your intentions are for trying to contact the dead, there are many ways available to do it.

Technology is always one step ahead of our needs, and you are now able to attempt contact with spirits using your phone or tablet.

Yes, it does sound a bit odd, but there are now apps that you can download to your phone that let you contact the spirits around you.

There are EVP apps that can now be used on your phone. Gone are the days where you would go ghost hunting in an abandoned hospital with a big computer box, antennae, and funny looking headphones.

Now, just download the app and you are ready to go.

What is EVP

EVP stands for electronic voice phenomena. They are sounds recorded on electronic devices that are interpreted as voices or messages from the dead.

The voices are either caught unintentionally or could form part of a contacting session, where people look to have specific questions answered by spirits.

EVP recordings are most often short noises or a very short phrase. While some swear by the clarity of these recordings, others believe that it is mostly personal interpretation as to what is being said.

EVP is typically recorded with what is called a spirit box, like this one on Amazon.

When did it start?

There was a spiritualist movement between 1840 and 1920. People more openly believed that spirits could be reached through mediums.

Mediums could be anything from a gifted person to an electronic device. American photographer, Attila von Szalay was the first person to try and record the voices of spirits, or at least capture these voices on recordings.

Although he started attempting to record spirits in 1941, he only managed to achieve what he thought was a successful recording in 1956 using a reel-to-reel tape recorder.

He found that many noises were recorded, that weren’t heard by the person recording.

He believed these noises to be voices of the dead. The first few messages were a bit strange, “This is G!”, “Hot Dog, Art!” and “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!”, so whether these were actual spirits or some intercepted phone conversations, we will never really know.

Pareidolia

Auditory pareidolia is when the brain incorrectly reads or interprets random patterns or signals as being familiar.

Regarding EVP, many scientists and non-believers think that the noises or ‘voices’ heard on these recordings are just random noises that people will themselves into hearing meaningful phrases.

The most prominent evidence of this is that the researcher always hears the voice in a language they understand, and not of an unfamiliar language.

The chances of this happening each time is unlikely and stands to reason that the random noise is just being interpreted as a human voice, to whichever word sounds more likely.

The willingness to hear a voice is the reason that a voice is heard – as skeptics say.

Starting your own paranormal investigation

If you are looking to start your own paranormal investigation to contact spirits around you, you won’t get very far without the correct tools.

Luckily you don’t have to splash out a mountain of cash to be able to contact the dead.

There are some decent apps that you can download onto your phone to contact the dead.

Simply download the app, ask the spirits some questions while recording, and play back the recording later on.

Hopefully, you would have caught something interesting or prominent, something that shows that the spirits around you exist and are willing to talk.

As with everything technological, there are a lot of really badly made or fake apps on the market.

Some that just throw in random voices or words into recordings to try and trick you into believing you have caught something unbelievable.

To save you the trouble of downloading countless EVP apps and finding most of them to be disastrous, here are the best EVP apps for you to try.

The below apps are the best out there and will definitely be worth your time to try out.

Now, although all of these work to an extent, none of them will work as well as actually picking up a quality spirit box. The best by far, and the one most often used by ghost hunters is this one you can actually pick up on Amazon.

What makes this app really great is that while you are listening to the recorded sounds, a graphical interface shows spikes in abnormal sounds, so you know when to really concentrate and listen for anything unusual

. You can increase playback sound and even playback at half speed.

All sound recordings done on the app can be copied over to your PC for further analysis.

The app has great sound quality, so you won’t have to sift through bad sound and crackling recordings.

This is another great choice, as it has a very helpful graphic interface that lets you keep track of recordings, and if there are any abnormal sounds or not.

The GUI will show any out of the ordinary readings, and alert you of a hotspot.

The voice recorder will also show spikes in abnormal sounds and give you a heads up if there is unusual activity.
